US researchers, WASHINGTON (AFP) kidney failure is a major complication of diabetes, but a study lab on mice showed that a high-fat, low-carb diet that could reverse in eight weeks, said Wednesday.
The extreme food plan is known as a ketogenic diet and is widely used to treat children with drug resistant epilepsy. It starves the body of carbohydrates and sugar, so that the body in burning fat for fuel instead of glucose deception.
The diet is so restrictive, it must be made with the help of experts. Meal options include scrambled eggs with Bacon, cream and butter omelet or lettuce mayonnaise showered.
Doctors the theory through the diet for diabetics may work the blockade of the toxic effects of glucose, a simple sugar as the body metabolizes food, can be too harmful in diabetes patients, that enough insulin, it rules lack.
So, the team at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York took two groups of mice, who are genetically predisposed were with type1 and type 2 diabetes. Half were fed a standard high-carb diet, while the other half received a ketogenic diet.
After eight weeks in the ketogene fed was reversed mice, renal failure, published study said in the open-access journal PLoS ONE.
"Our study is the first to show that dietary intervention alone is enough, turn to this severe complication of diabetes," said Director author of Charles Mobbs at the Mount Sinai School of medicine.
"This finding has significant implications for the tens of thousands of Americans with diabetic renal failure, and possibly other complications, diagnosed each year."
According to the national institutes of health 24 million people in the United States have diabetes, and close to 180,000 people living with kidney failure related to her diabetes.
Mobbs said that the diet as a long-term solution in humans should be suitable, but said the results show his even as little as a month on the regime could, enough to the body "reset" and avoid to kidney failure.
Mobbs, said the results "should help us to identify a drug target and later pharmacological interventions to imitate that the impact of diet."
His team is planning further studies to explore ketogenic diet affect other neurological diseases such as retinopathy caused the loss of sight.
