Low vitamin D levels of obesity in children bound (HealthDay)

In the study, researchers examined vitamin D levels in 237 healthy overweight and obese not white and black children, aged 8 to 18. They found that most of them were vitamin D deficiency. Low levels of vitamin D were associated with higher body mass index and fat levels and lower levels of "good" high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.


Among those with vitamin D deficiency white children were more likely to higher levels of fat between their internal organs (visceral fat) while black children investigators have found more often in higher fat just under the skin (subcutaneous fat).


The study is published in the may issue of the journal of clinical endocrinology & metabolism.


"Vitamin D deficiency is rife in American youth, and there are some proposal in adults, that low vitamin D plays a role in the rising rates of type 2 diabetes can be." It is possible the same for the young people with type 2, diabetes may be true, "said lead author Dr. Silva Arslanian, of the University of Pittsburgh, in a press release of the endocrine society."


"In addition to therapeutic interventions that correct levels, high rates of vitamin D deficiency in youth, benefits of vitamin D optimization on fat [blood FAT] lipid profile and risk of type 2 must be diabetes research," Arslanian added.
