Make the move to exercise for overweight and obese people

How much exercise get overweight and obese people? More than many think, according to research by nurses from case Western Reserve University's Frances Payne Bolton School of nursing.

They reported their findings in the journal article of the American Academy of nurse practitioners "exercise and exercise intentions among overweight and obese individuals."

Deborah Walton Smith, who is now a lecturer at Gonzaga University, led the exercise study as a graduate student at case Western Reserve. The cooperation on the study Joyce Fitzpatrick, the Elizabeth Ford Professor of nursing, and Mary Quinn were Griffin, Assistant Professor of nursing at case Western Reserve.

Researchers respondents the activities and intentions 175 overweight and obese people visited clinics run or owned by nurse practitioners in Spokane, were the people who answer questions tests on more than one behavior, Washington 40 years of age or older and had a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or higher range for overweight and obese.

The investigators found that 29 percent for six months, had regularly exercised 39 percent and 25 percent considered training exercise.

Always active, only 12 percent had no desire or thoughts.

The results are important for combating the obesity health issues.

The Center for disease control and prevention 34% of the population overweight is, and the condition leads some 300 000 premature deaths annually as a result of diabetes, high blood pressure and coronary heart disease with reference to questions overweight. Secondary to the problem of obesity is sedentary lifestyle.

Little information is available about the exercise habits of overweight and obese persons visit nurse practitioners. The study provides information about how to improve the practices by these health professionals.

The height of obesity was higher than expected; many patients had a BMI of at least a 31. A BMI score between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight and at least a 30 are in the field of obesity. People were in three classes of obesity, based on BMI scores of low (30-34, 9), medium (35-39, 9), and high groups (more than 40).

Surprised by the level of exercise reported, Quinn Griffin said this study shows that just because someone does not mean obesity, they are not exercising or it in.

Them with lower BMI values in the range of obese tend to be more exercise. "This other research information verified, the the higher their BMI that is less," Quinn Griffin said this reflects the population as a whole Add.

Quinn also, Griffin stated that the more you exercised, which saw other benefits individuals in active.

The research provides information for NPs, see the overweight or obese patients, can help deciding whether to exercise them, and follow then visit to on these intentions in future.

Quinn said Griffin to see nurse practitioners, who visited patients for routine health and check ups, people move an opportunity of ponders after the start to have exercise.

She added that as a nurse practitioner health status of the individual know an exercise routine to the special needs can tailor the health of professional.

"they also can encourage small steps as starting go," she said.

The respondents were also asked whether they had a dog at home. More than half have. A pet dog provides a positive reason for the dog and person, walk.

Another small step, people can buy a pedometer to promote. Reports have only 28 percent of those polled. Many don't realize how far they can go in a short time, Griffin Quinn.
