the risk of fractures after weight loss surgery still higher than can be accepted so far, suggests a new study.
Earlier studies have shown that people who undergo surgery to lose weight, such as gastric bypass, have an increased risk of fractures. A study shows, for example, a 1.8-fold increased risk of fracture when compared to the general population.
But further analysis showed the risk was actually closer to 2.3 times higher, according to the study, on Saturday at the Endocrine Society annual meeting in Boston.
Researchers pointed out, the chances to break, which are hands or the feet still höhere-- about three times higher than normal.
"Negative impact on health of bones, that the risk of fractures has undergone an important consideration in humans with regard to bariatric surgery and bariatric surgery, those are", said study author Kelly Nakamura student of medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of medicine in Rochester, Minnesota, in a press release.
Following 258 patients who had bariatric surgery, researchers found that 79 of them had 132 fractures in the course of nine years. On average, the first break happened about six years after the operation. The study found patients who got more physical activity before surgery had a lower risk of fracture than those who were more settled.
The authors of the study the increased risk of bone fracture had not necessarily the same as with a greater risk for developing osteoporosis, the age-related bone thinning disease.
As a result, they may be drugs for the treatment of osteoporosis for these patients said suitable. The researchers concluded that additional studies have not only the connections between weight loss surgery and fractures, but also to determine the best way to prevent these breaks are required in the first place.
"Clinicians might note must measures to improving bone health and fracture risk following bariatric surgery to reduce nutrition, prevention and optimization of calcium and vitamin D as such as autumn", Dr. Kurt kennel, Assistant Professor of medicine in the Division of Endocrinology at Mayo Clinic, in the press release said the study of principal investigator.
Because this study in a medical meeting was presented, the data should be made and the conclusions as provisional considered will be published to in a peer-review journal.
